ANTIPOLO CITY SPED CENTER

San Isidro Elementary School Special Classes is situated in C. Lawis St., Brgy. San Isidro, Antipolo City. It was acquired through donation in l968 but its originated site was in Brgy. San Jose along the national highway going to the town of Teresa.
The special classes are the fulfilment of the dreams of the people in the community. Since 1968 nine principals served and have been serving to uplift the quality of life in the community through education. Since then the school population continue to increased.
In June 2001 the first SPED program in the public school formally opened. This was requested by the indigent parents of the DEAF residing in Antipolo who cannot afford to send their children to private school. At the same time children with other disabilities were accepted also. This was approved by the former City Mayor, ANGELITO C. GATLABAYAN thru the support of MRS. ESTELITA J. CORONADO - District Supervisor.
The first recipient was 22 deaf students, handled by Miss ANGELINA G. ENRIQUEZ together with 2 para-teacher namely Mr. Elmo F. Oliveros, MR. Benjie Calatrava who was assisting her in teaching. The following years, 1 more para teachers were employed due to the number of enrolees growing yearly, Mr. Juancho R. Mataranas was hired.
School year 2003-2004 SPED for Mentally Challenged, children with autism was administered by DR. NORMA L. MAALINDOG the former ES-1 SPED and the Asst. to the Schools Division Superintendent. Year 2008 she was transferred to Lucena and MRS. CONCEPCION S. SORIANO was assigned to handle the ten first enrolees with mental retardation particularly with down syndrome.
In school year 2004-2005 the program for visually impaired was opened at JUAN SUMULONG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. MRS. ABEGAIL AQUINO who received training from the Resources for the Blind started the program with only seven pupils. Four are high functioning, 1 low vision pupil, one is suspected with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and 1 pupil with behavioural problem.
Year 2005-2006 rooms are not sufficient in SAN ISIDRO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL that’s why the Hearing Impaired pupils make use and occupied the spare room at the UNIVERSITY OF RIZAL SYSTEM.
While the mentally challenged with 8 pupils stayed in SAN ISIDRO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
November 2005 MS. SHIELA ANGNGED moved out from being a regular secondary teacher and continued her service to teach special children. She was hired to handle children with different disabilities assisted by Mrs. Concepcion S. Soriano who was then in the regular class teaching pupils with same disabilities.
In year 2007 the school accepted enrolees from different places of Rizal. And due to the growing population of the CSN, volunteer teachers were accepted through the person of MS. IVONNE C. RAMIREZ, HERSY LLANES, and SALLY GAURANA to assist the present teacher handling mentally challenged pupils and later employed as SEF-teacher under the City Government of Antipolo. Another para-teacher was hired to assist the teacher in hearing impaired for preparatory class through the person of MR. WELSH LOZANO.
It is in this year also that MS. MARY ROSE A. AYDALIA was accepted to continue the program that was started by the previous deaf teacher who left the school temporarily to fulfil her dreams in MaryLand, USA.
The Two-storey A.C.GATLABAYAN BUILDING was evacuated by the SAN SIDRO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL and occupied by the SPED CLASSES. Finally, the merging of Hearing Impaired, Mentally Challenged and Visually Impaired were made to happened, they joined together in one school with the same goal of improving the programs for the benefit of the children and Youth with Special Needs in Anipolo.
In year 2008 the following events took place, the request building through the joined effort of the HI parents and sped teachers was reviewed by DR. NORMA L. MAALINDOG AND AUREA F. STO DOMINGO to augment the increasing population of SPED students every year. COUNCILOR RONALD R. BARCENA was the one who initiated this request and it was luckily granted by the late HON. MAYOR VICTOR R. SUMULONG. The said request was announced during the Flag Ceremony at Dimasalang Park on July 21, 2008.
Secondary classes were opened and held their classes first in a conjoined room together with the elementary pupils, additional teacher under DepED was employed in June in the person of Mr. Jay Maisel Lardizabal, MS. SHIRLEY S. GAMIT, a regular teacher, was also transferred to teach the Visually Impaired pupils. In August, MS. ALICE AGNES L. LIM was hired also as assistant teacher under the City Government of Antipolo and assigned to teach Hearing Impaired in High School level and multiple disabled pupils.
High School Classes started to operate with 20 students; they left the elementary conjoined room and occupied the old room used by the regular class of San Isidro Elementary School. In June of the same year, DR. FERDINAND MILLAN was designated to be the SPED Consultant.
The year 2009 marked the establishment of the 3 storey building with roof deck, 9 classrooms with built-in comfort room, lavatory and time out room. This was approved by the late mayor and build under the governance of HON. MAYOR NILO O. LEYBLE. The PUNO TYPE BUILDING was also constructed as an additional resource room. Four additional sped teachers were hired namely DOUGLAS TYRONE LEYVA, NIEVES HABANA, SHEENA JADE MANUEL and GENELYN SALMORIN, and assistant teacher were employed in August in the person of MS. MELISSA M. PANTILANAN to teach 2nd year Hearing Impaired students in secondary level.
In the same year the following event also took place, a new Asst. Schools Division Superintendent, DR. MARIA LUZ P. SALVADOR was assigned in the Division of Antipolo. To supervise the SPED program accordingly she assigned MR. ANSELMO L. CELESTE and in a while MRS. LOURDES A. TABUENA took over the position as SPED COORDINATOR.
From SAN ISIDRO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL-Special Classes, the school was recognized as ANTIPOLO CITY SPED CENTER, the only public School that offers complete special education program in all level for all Children and Youth with Special Needs residing in Antipolo and nearby towns.
In January 2010, MRS. WILMA R. DOCTOR was appointed as Teacher-In-Charge. Presently, the school administration desires to achieve the great improvement of the program to be able to respond to the integral development and wellbeing of the children and youth in Antipolo City.
